The Micato Grand Safari
15 Days door-to-door

The grand, glamourous, unabashedly luxurious safaris favoured by princes and princesses, potentates, plutocrats, and ex-presidents (Teddy Roosevelt’s epic 1909 safari was one of the first of its sumptuous kind) are central to East Africa’s heritage as one of the world’s most desired destinations. This Grand Safari is Micato’s homage to those old and romantic days, to their indulgent and exquisite grace.

The Micato Grand Safari’s six flights make travel between game preserves and luxury camps a seamless, time-saving joy. And our stays in places like the airy Tortilis Camp in Amboseli; Bateleur or Governor’s Il Moran camps in the Maasai Mara; the charmingly luxe Four Seasons Safari Lodge in the Serengeti; and, of course, the Lewa Safari Camp bring us into close and comfortable contact with some of Africa’s richest game lands and most stirring landscapes.

Safari Highlights

  • East Africa’s most luxurious tented camps and lodges, including splendid Bateleur Camp, much-celebrated Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, and the elegantly eclectic Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.
  • Tree-top canopy walks in the Ngare Ndare Forest; Samburu-led camel rides on the plains; horsebacking; and graceful hot air ballooning at sunrise followed by al fresco breakfast.
  • Touchdown to takeoff services of your Micato Safari Director, and 24-hour access to our one-of-a-kind Concierge Service.
  • Spectacular views and incomparably fascinating ecosystems: regal Mount Kilimanjaro; the Serengeti Plains; the famed Mara River; the Laikipia Plateau and jagged Aberdare mountains; and the Lost World of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
Meeting some of our closest relatives in their home
The velvet-green slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes are a lofty and lush paradise. In the rainforests here–buzzing with the sounds of jungle life–the soft mists prevail as they did when Dian Fossey wrote her legendary book Gorillas in the Mist. And the creature that drew Dr. Fossey is the same one which beckons to us: the rare and regal Mountain Gorilla. This post-safari extension to Rwanda is based from luxury lodgings and gets us up-close-and-personal with these gentle giants twice.

Cape Town Sojourn
A beautiful mix of natural and man-made pleasures, Cape Town is Africa's treasure for good reason. This perfect post-safari sojourn yields a winning blend of top city sights, sophisticated dining, luscious winelands, and more.

Lend a Helping Hand
Every Micato traveller is given the opportunity to change the course of a life on our luxury African safari tours. We invite guests to spend an extra day in Nairobi and visit one of our AmericaShare projects in the slums, learn of the challenges, meet the orphaned and vulnerable children and be inspirited to help.

Zanzibar
Zanzibar. Its perfumed air caresses travellers with scents of the spices that have grown in abundance throughout the island since time began. Exotic and enchanting, this Indian Ocean isle allures travellers with a personality and pace all its own—just a short hop from mainland Tanzania, but a world away.

Hot Air Balloon Safari
It is an effortless feeling usually reserved for dreams… natural, feather-light, exhilarating. There, looking out over a stunning landscape, from your peerless perch, in the calming silence of the African dawn… it’s hard to imagine it getting any better. And then, the star of the show—quite literally, in fact—pokes out from under its terrestrial cloak.

About Micato Safaris
Micato Safaris logo
Back in 1966, Felix Pinto, a ranking member of the ex-British Kenyan government, started a luxury safari company. He also dabbled in gentleman farming on the family's rambling acreage outside Nairobi, which was even profiled in the prestigious American edition of Geo magazine. Micato's private safaris ultimately prevailed over farming and forty-five years and a Stanford, Harvard and Stanford Business School graduation later, the Pintos are joined by their (well educated!) children in the running of Micato Safaris. As it has always been, Micato is more than just a business—it is a labour of love.

The Experience
The thrilling jolt of discovery, the shared smiles of amazement. Connecting with nature, with new cultures… and with a timeless part of yourself. Such experiences are not always common… but in Africa, they are as regular as the rising Serengeti sun.

But this is more than just Africa—it’s Micato’s Africa. It’s an experience unlike any other, where you are a VIP everywhere you go. It is a blend of excitement and elegance, a place of delightful surprises and uncommon luxury. It is the home of Felix and Jane Pinto, who treat their guests, as Travel+Leisure noted, like “well-loved, out-of-town relatives.”

Whether you're looking for a classic safari, a private off-the-beaten path journey, or a personal exploration of Africa's tribal cultures and rituals, there is simply no experience like a Micato safari.
